We recently had our old bathroom scale die on us right in the middle of our weight loss journey, and that sent us down the rabbit hole of comparing bathroom scales. I went looking for something that could actually keep a tally of my weight over time and sync automatically with my Samsung Health app. My wife needed the same thing, except she's on Apple Health, so whatever we picked had to play nicely with both. I also didn't want to be pressing any buttons to force a sync every time, I wanted it to just work in the background without thinking about it. That search led me to a handful of scales, most from brands I'd never heard of, and a few well known names that somehow charged more for the same feature set. After digging through reviews, I landed on the
Withings Body Smart, and I'm really glad I did.
More than just a number on the screen
The scale checks every box I was looking for, but it also goes further with advanced metrics like fat percentage, body composition, heart rate, and muscle mass. I'll admit the fat percentage and muscle numbers were not exactly welcome guests the first time they showed up. It didn't take long though before I started seeing them as useful information instead of something to be discouraged by, and now I actually look forward to checking them. As a fun little extra, the scale also shows you today's weather right on the display when you step on, which is a small touch but a nice one.
My favorite feature
The thing I love most is that our whole family is set up on this one scale. My wife and I are the only ones with actual accounts, but the kids are entered under our parental accounts too, and the scale does a genuinely good job figuring out who just stepped on based on weight, which is a known issue I had read about earlier. On the rare chance it guesses wrong, you just lean left or right to cycle through the other profiles until it lands on the right person. I haven't had it fail yet, though we're all in fairly different weight ranges, so results may vary depending on how close in weight your household members are.
Connectivity and build quality
The scale connects to Wi-Fi for pulling in the weather and uploading your weight data to Withings, and it also has Bluetooth for pairing directly with your phone. Build quality feels solid and heavy in a good way, nothing about it feels cheap or wobbly. It comes with removable feet for use on carpet or rugs, and if you're on tile or hard flooring you don't need them at all since the built in rubber feet keep it firmly in place on its own. It also has an auto shutoff feature so it's not just sitting there powered on waiting for you.
Screen, app, and a fun bonus for the smart home crowd
The color screen is easy to read even first thing in the morning, and the Withings app itself is genuinely well built, even though we mostly rely on Samsung Health and Apple Health instead of living inside the Withings app day to day. As a bonus for anyone into home automation, I was able to hook the scale into my Home Assistant setup, which let me build a couple of dashboards comparing progress between my wife and me over time. Seeing that side by side has actually helped keep us both motivated to keep pushing toward our goals.
It runs on 4 AAA batteries, and between the auto shutoff and efficient design, they last a long time before needing a change.
Is it worth it
As of right now, the Body Smart is running $129.95, and at that price I don't think it's a bad value at all for everything it does. One thing worth knowing too is that it's HSA eligible, so if you've got funds sitting in an HSA account, you can put those toward it instead of paying out of pocket, which is exactly how I ended up buying mine. I'm very happy with it overall, it does exactly what it's supposed to do, and if my current one ever gave out tomorrow, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy the exact same scale again.
The Good
- Syncs automatically with both Samsung Health and Apple Health, no manual button pressing required
- Advanced metrics like body composition, fat percentage, muscle mass, and heart rate go well beyond just a weight number
- Automatically recognizes each family member, with an easy lean left or right fix if it guesses wrong
- Solid, heavy build quality with a screen that's easy to read
- Home Assistant compatible for anyone who wants to build their own dashboards and tracking
- Reasonable price for the feature set compared to similarly equipped competitors
- HSA eligible, so you can put pre-tax health dollars toward it instead of paying out of pocket
The Bad
- Auto user detection is entirely weight based, so if two people in your household are within a few pounds of each other, expect the scale to lean on those 3-letter alias prompts more often instead of guessing correctly on its own
- The Withings app has plenty of its own features, but if you're syncing out to Samsung or Apple Health anyway, some of that ends up going unused
- Fat percentage and body composition numbers can be a little jarring the first time you see them, even though they're ultimately useful
If you're after a scale that tracks more than just your weight, plays nicely with both Samsung Health and Apple Health, and can handle a whole household without extra hassle, the
Withings Body Smart is worth putting in your bathroom.
