Vertical Magna Latch for Pool Safety

Vertical Magna Latch for Pool Safety
One of our friends recently had a pool installed in his house and to protect his kids from drowning in the pool, he installed a vertical Magna Latch. The concept for the Magna is cool because the latch sits about four feet off the ground and in order to remove it, the child needs to pull up on it. The Manga Latch is basically a lock powered by a powerful permenent magnet (never loses its power), so the gate snaps and is locked. Additionally, the lock can also be locked with a key, so it adds double protection.

Anyhow, we thought it was a clever device for those looking to secure their pool for the safety of their kids. The Magna Latch seems like a good way to keep them out.

Make sure you check with your local authorities for height measurement/requirements on swimming pool gates before actually buying one as those differ from county to county.

iClooly iPod touch stand makes your iPod look like a miniature iMac

iClooly iPod touch stand makes your iPod look like a miniature iMac
Yeah, the iClooly iPod touch stand is not the most innovative product in the world, but the aluminum and resin stand makes your iPod look like a tiny iMac. If you put them size by side you'd think they are one and the same just miniaturized. The stand allows you to swivel the iPod so you can lay it both horizontal or vertically.

Retailing at $28.06 USD (the price listed on GeekStuff4U is a different currency) it is one of the most clever stands for the iPod touch yet.

Velux Skylights Help You Go Green to Save Energy

Velux Skylights Help You Go Green to Save Energy
Here at Service Villa we are always looking for innovative products that can make all our lives better. I recently went to a party and noticed a skylight over the kitchen area where the party was held. I couldn't help but notice how much this device helped without anyone even noticing what it was doing.

The use of a skylight provides natural light without the use of any electricity. Since the sun is a free source of energy it will not only reduce your electrical usage but also the strain on your utility to generate the power for you. Studies have found that natural light has a positive effect on humans emotions and psychologically. These same studies also show that people living in well-lit homes tend to be generally healthier.

Velux is one of the big players when it comes to skylights, roof windows, and sun tunnels. They make different styles and shapes to allow you to get creative. Velux skylights block out heat gain associated with UV penetration, while minimizing air leakage, keeping in place the conditioned air inside your home. They injects argon gas between the panes of all their glass and use low emissivity coatings to make sure their products are the most energy efficient and environmentally supportive in the industry.

Velux also features venting skylights. The venting skylights reduce the need for air conditioning throughout certain periods of the year, and when installed in bathrooms or places that can have moisture, they remove moisture and foul odors from the air. This in turn removes the need to have a bathroom fan installed, making it an even greener product.

One of our favorite features of the skylights in general is the privacy you get. You can have all your windows closed yet still get that much needed natural light. If it is nice and cool outside, and you purchase one of their vented units you could open the manual or electric vent and have some fresh air from outside minimizing your cooling costs.

If we all had skylight's at home just imagine the savings we could have and the carbon footprint that we could relieve.

The benefits of the skylight clearly outweigh their price. Specially when it eventually pays for itself after the money you will save on electric utility.

Big Blue Lagoon - Backyard Inflatable Water Park and Slide
This huge 16 feet across backyard water slide/lagoon has two water slides and a small lagoon near the front of the play area. Included in the Big Blue Lagoon is an air blower that plugs into a 120V outlet so it can inflated fast. Also included are a patch kit for minor repairs and 12 total stakes (eight for the water park itself and four for the air blower). Water is supplied to the inflatable water park through a garden hose.

For those with kids and a lot of money to blow ($599 retail), this should be a fun distraction.

Kyouei Design Ceramic Umbrella Pot

Kyouei Design Ceramic Umbrella Pot
The Kyouei Design ceramic umbrella pot is a combination of a large umbrella pot and a small plant pot attached at the bottom. After coming home from a rainy day, you place the umbrella on the pot and the water from the umbrella drains into the plant pot via small internal holes. The water that would once just evaporate or make a mess in your foyer, will now help contain life. This design won't be a hot seller in the hot deserts of California, but those in rainy Seattle might want to take a look at this one.

Alfredo Häberli Modern Pattern Bookshelf

Alfredo Häberli Modern Pattern Bookshelf
Books are typically stacked horizontally in a very unsurprising layout on your average bookshelf. Alfredo Häberli throws that concept out the window with his Pattern Bookshelf, which is a series of pentagons stacked in different ways and forms. The concept is interesting and it works. When you see the books stacked on this bookshelf it makes you want to explore the contents therein.

The bookshelf is available in 2 flavors: traffic white and silver. Both have black edges and show the milled aluminum.

Price is unknown.

Buy it at Quodes.

Roku Introduces the Netflix Player

Roku Introduces the Netflix Player
The Roku Netflix player is a cause for a lot of excitement for Netflix subscribers like myself. I've been visiting the web site HackingNetflix for months hoping something would turn up. I'm glad this is finally out and though we have not had the chance to try it at our offices yet (we are working on getting a unit), you should check it out.

The Netflix player allows you to stream movies that are available as Instant Watch on the Netflix web site, directly into your TV. You simply connect the box to your home network (via ethernet or WiFi) and plug the device into your television via any of the standard video/audio connections (HDMI, Component, S-video, RCA jacks, optical audio).

Currently the video stream is near DVD quality (based on your internet connection speed), but we are betting that there will be High Definition content coming in the future. And since this set-top box has the capability to play and output High Definition content, there is very little risk of the player being outdated very quickly.

What makes this player more exciting is that it retails for only $99. And if you are a paying Netflix subscriber, you don't need to pay for any of the instant watch movies. Compare the price to something like the Apple TV where it costs $229 for the unit plus the price of each movie rental, and it looks like even more of a bargain.

We hope Roku answers our requests for a detailed review, but for now, check out the Roku web site to get informed.
